Become a Chartered Member easily through CIOB's APEL pathway

Bryan Wright is an Engineering Manager at CALA Homes with over twenty-five years of experience in the construction industry. Although Bryan gained Higher National Certificates (HNC) in both Civil Engineering and then Construction Management during his early career, he felt that the bespoke nature of being a civil engineer within a house-building discipline prevented him from progressing in his career without further qualifications and training.

Bryan believed that the APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) pathway to CIOB Membership could provide him with the support he needed to take the next step in his career whilst balancing education with work. The process began with an interview stage to discuss Bryan’s skills and knowledge, progressing with one-on-one help for the final assessment. 

“I always wanted to show a higher level of learning and achievement and wanted to back that up with a professional membership. APEL helped me develop, giving me an extra level of confidence and validation with the equivalent of a degree-level qualification. I’m about to mentor a graduate and am ready for my next challenge, possibly a Fellowship!”

Bryan went on to praise the support he had throughout his APEL journey, recommending it to anyone who is struggling to progress in construction.

“My training provider from Training LMS showed me I had valuable transferable skills that could be used in my assessment. I would initially find the APEL questions challenging, but he was brilliant and helped me use my experiences to my advantage.”

Bryan’s training provider added,

“Bryan demonstrated a clear determination to write his report and took on board the guidance offered by his tutor and the online resources offered by TLMS. His work improved incrementally as he progressed through his coaching which led to him comfortably achieving a clear pass.”

Bryan also felt the CIOB’s Academy CPD courses, e-mails and Construction Management magazine has helped him understand current and relevant construction industry topics, tying in well with what his company is working towards. Having the willingness to learn has helped Bryan join in discussions on sustainability and the use of drones in construction and have his voice heard in the workplace.
