About the Chartered Institute of Building
We are the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB): we stand for the science, ethics, and practice of built environments across the world. Everything we do is to improve the quality of life for those creating and using the built environment.
We are the leading international professional body for those working in and leading the construction industry. Established in 1834, we offer a range of services including membership, professional development, qualifications, and resources to support individuals and organisations in shaping the future of the built environment, driving innovation, sustainability, and ethical practices.
Our educational initiatives also advance the skills and knowledge of construction professionals, while our advocacy calls for the highest standards in public policy, enhancing the quality and integrity of construction projects globally.
More about the CIOB
Celebrating 190 years of global influence
Construction history was made in 1834 when a group of Master Builders came together in London to create The Builders’ Society. Fast-forward to today, our name may have changed, but our commitment to uphold professional standards, drive innovation and support the industry’s people remains as strong. We’re now joined by 48,000 members across 100 countries dedicated to leading a cultural shift in the built environment. This celebration not only reflects on the heritage of our remarkable creators, but also looks forward to those influencing a brighter future.
Setting standards for our industry since 1834
Since the first group of Master Builders met in 1834, the CIOB has set and upheld the standards for our industry to meet. We do this for the safety of construction workers, working at 1,200 feet off the ground; for the families living in their first home; for governments planning the future of their cities; for projects as varied as the Houses of Parliament in London to the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur.
Who We Are
We have a role in the management, leadership, education and development of our industry.
Where We Are
The CIOB is a truly global organisation, with over 49,700 members in more than 100 countries. Whilst our headquarters are based in Bracknell, we have staff spread across the whole of the UK and the rest of the globe to assist our members.
What We Do
We guide our members as they embark on their careers and support our policymakers as they define the standards we all meet, together creating an environment where the public can live and work safely, comfortably and confidently.
Our Royal Charter
The CIOB Royal Charter, granted in 1980, outlines the objectives which form the foundations of our work, and our role and sets the standards to which members are committed.
