Summary

We are pleased to launch our annual CIOB Academic Summit on Tuesday 10 September 2024.

This accessible virtual conference will lead the way to transform our academics connectability on a global scale - leading the way for cross collaboration, sharing of cutting-edge research, knowledge, education, and most importantly building a strong sense of community. This conference will aim to create a community that problem solves and creates partnerships through engaging discussions.

The summit aims to bring together academic leaders, researchers, policy makers and professional services staff within the built environment education arena, to share knowledge, and evidence agility, innovation and inclusivity.

    Welcome Address
    • Caroline Gumble , CEO, CIOB
    Caroline has been with CIOB since 2019 and is responsible for the Institute’s leadership, supported by a team of directors and senior staff who are subject matter experts in their field. This appointment followed the extensive business leadership experience Caroline gained in the UK and overseas, within the automotive and capital goods sectors, and membership organisation leadership within EEF Ltd / Make UK. Caroline also serves as a Director of the Board of Trustees for the Institute of Export & International Trade, a Trustee of CIOB Assist (CIOB’s benevolent fund) and has been appointed as Visiting Professor of Global Engagement and Transformation – Built Environment at Loughborough University’s School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering. She also received, in 2023, an Honorary Doctor of Science award from the University of Wolverhampton Caroline is leading a member-focussed global transformation of the Institute, with the support of CIOB’s Trustee Board.

    • Nicky Harris, Lecturer & Programme Leader ,UoS
    Dr Gregg Watts is the DSBNE Lead for Research and Knowledge Exchange , University of Salford. He has been the Programme Lead for Quantity Surveying, and worked in the construction industry for many leading main contractors managing a range of multi-million pound projects prior to moving into academia. To date Greg has over 50 publications, including in conferences, journals, and textbooks, and he regularly works with industry partners across a range of subjects. Nicky Harris is a Lecturer & Programme Leader ,University of Salford.

    The socio-legal dimensions of responsible AI and its role in improving health
    • Dr Andrew Agapiou
    Dr Andrew Agapiou is an Associate Professor, in Construction Law and the Academic Lead, Construction Procurement & Law Research Cluster, Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde. He has been a construction law management researcher for over 25 years and has held over £1m worth of research and knowledge exchange awards within the construction law management field from the EPSRC, ESRC, ARC, the UK government, the Scottish Government, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and private sector organizations. Andrew has well-honed social science research skills and works on the interface between law, technology and the constructed environment with over 100 + high-impact publications, including recent work on integrating AI technologies to support remote building inspection process. Andrew is the coordinator of the CIB Law and Dispute Resolution Working Commission, in addition to being an Innovation Champion for the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre.

    The politics of the self
    • Efrosyni Konstantinou
    Dr Efrosyni (Effie) Konstantinou is an Associate Professor in the Strategic Management of Projects, UCL. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UKHEA and Director of Ethics, Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, UCL. Effie has developed the notion of the politics of the self and leads an interdisciplinary programme of research on the politics of the self in connection with ethics, professionalism and Grand Challenges. With more than 20 years of experience, Effie helps people and organisations shape and achieve their vision, and more specifically how to make difficult decisions at the strategic level. Her talk is focusing on: The politics of the self at the intersection of ethics, professionalism and governance for Grand Challenges.

    Closing Remarks
    • Ros Thorpe
    Ros Thorpe, our Director of Education and Standards, joined the Institute in 2009 as an accreditation officer and took on the role of Head of Education in 2011. Prior to that, Ros worked as a teacher of English and corporate courses manager at the British Council in Moscow, where she lived for 10 years. Ros has a degree in English and a post-graduate diploma in Russian, as well as various teaching qualifications. Ros is a Chartered Member of the CMI. Ros is responsible for managing the Institute’s regulated qualifications and exams, the accreditation process, and maintaining the Institute’s published standards, the Education Framework.
