The next UK General Election will be held on 4 July 2024, to elect 650 members to the House of Commons.

This campaign page contains information about the general election and what it means for the built environment. 

CIOB, as a royal chartered professional body, has been engaging with parties across the political spectrum to ensure that policies to improve the built environment are given the importance necessary to ensure that the construction industry can continue to be a key economic driver in the UK.

CIOB's Manifesto for the Built Environment

Ahead of the 2024 General Election, CIOB has set out its vision for the future of the built environment in the UK. This manifesto, outlines potential future policies for the next government under each of our corporate plan themes - Sustainability, Quality & Safety, Future of Construction and People & Skills. Under each heading you can find our main policy asks. These are broken down into those that could be achieved in the first 100 days of a new government as well as those which could be more long-term ambitions.

2024 UK General Election Timeline

Below are some useful dates to have in mind ahead of the election:

22 May 2024Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a UK general election will be held on 4 July 2024.
30 May 2024Parliament is dissolved meaning any remaining parliamentary bills that have not received Royal Assent have been dropped.
7 June 2024Deadline for nominations to be submitted for candidates in seats across the UK.
18 June 2024Voter registration deadline.
19 June 2024Deadline for postal vote applications.
W/C 10 June 2024Each party published their manifestos outlining policy priorities.
4 July 2024Polling day.
4-5 July 2024Election results published seat by seat.
9 July 2024Parliament returns to elect the Speaker of the House and to swear in new members.
17 July 2024State opening of Parliament.
