After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, Joanna gained extensive senior-level audit and advisory experience specialising in not-for-profit organisations at Deloitte and Crowe Clark Whitehill. Most recently she worked as Deputy Director of Finance at Shelter where she was responsible for managing the finances of the charity and its subsidiary with £70m of diverse income. She is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, holds a Diploma in Charity Accounting, and was previously a technical screener for the Charity Annual Report and Accounts Awards for the ICAEW.

Joanna joined the CIOB in March 2016 as Finance Director. She is responsible for the strategic and operational financial leadership of the Institute.

Joanna became our Chief Operating Officer in January 2022 focusing on turning strategic vision into effective delivery, as well as taking responsibility for the effective and efficient running of the CIOB’s internal organisational processes, including Finance, IT and Data, HR, and Project Management Office.
