What is TechCIOB?

Technical Membership (TechCIOB) of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is a professional grade designed for individuals who have significant technical expertise in the construction industry. 

Technical Membership with CIOB is a valuable credential for construction professionals looking to validate their technical skills and advance their careers.

Who is it for?

Technical Membership (TechCIOB) of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is aimed at professionals who have  technical expertise in the construction industry but may not have a formal degree. 

This membership grade is designed to recognize and support individuals who excel in specific technical roles. Here are some examples of who TechCIOB is aimed at:

• Fire Safety Officers: Specialists responsible for implementing and maintaining fire safety measures on construction sites.
• Utility Technicians: Experts managing the installation and maintenance of utilities like water, gas, and electricity.
• CAD Designers: Individuals skilled in using computer-aided design software to create detailed construction plans.
• Building Control Technicians: Professionals ensuring that construction projects comply with building regulations and standards.
• BIM Modellers: Specialists in Building Information Modelling, creating and managing digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places.
• Off-Site Manufacturing and Digital Technologies: Those working in areas like prefabrication, robotics, and other advanced construction technologies.
• Site Supervisors: Professionals overseeing construction sites and ensuring that projects are completed safely and efficiently.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you must meet the following requirements:

Qualifications

• England and Wales: A construction qualification such as an HNC, HND, or other recognised construction qualification at Level 3, 4, or 5 (excluding Trade qualifications).
• Scotland: SCQF Level 6, 7, or 8.
• International: A diploma in a construction-related subject. (This will be assessed for its UK equivalent.)

Experience

• With an HND, NVQ Level 4/5, or SCQF Level 7/8: A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a technical role within construction.
• With an HNC, NVQ Level 3, or SVQ Level 6: A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a technical role within construction.

What Does the Application Process Involve?

The application is a written submission where you’ll demonstrate your skills and knowledge across these key areas:

4. Site Supervision and Management
5. Health, Safety, and Wellbeing
6. Ethics and Professionalism

For each area, you’ll provide examples that show how your experience meets our standards.

Timescale: There is no time limit on how long you take to complete the application.  Once it is submitted the assessment process takes around 6 weeks.
