Technical Membership (TechCIOB) recognises professionals with substantial technical expertise in construction. This credential validates technical skills and supports career growth in the industry.
Technical Specialist (TechCIOB) Pathway

Our Technical Member grade TechCIOB may be for you if you have a level 4 (for example, NVQ4, BTEC) qualification and 3 years of experience working in a technical role or a level 3 qualification and 5 years of experience working in a technical role. Typical roles that people do are BIM co-ordinator, CAD Designer, Site Supervisor, Retrofit Co-ordinator, Repairs Officer, and Fire risk assessor.

Eligibility Criteria
To apply, you must meet the following requirements:
Qualifications
- England and Wales: A construction qualification such as an HNC, HND, or other recognised construction qualification at Level 3, 4, or 5 (excluding Trade qualifications).
- Scotland: SCQF Level 6, 7, or 8.
- International: A diploma in a construction-related subject. (This will be assessed for its UK equivalent.)

Experience
- With an HND, NVQ Level 4/5, or SCQF Level 7/8: A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a technical role within construction.
- With an HNC, NVQ Level 3, or SVQ Level 6: A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a technical role within construction.

Technical Membership (TechCIOB) of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is aimed at professionals who have technical expertise in the construction industry but may not have a formal degree.

TechCIOB Application Process
The application is a written submission where you’ll demonstrate your skills and knowledge across these key areas:
- Technology
- Sustainability
- Legislation and Commercial Knowledge
- Site Supervision and Management
- Health, Safety, and Wellbeing
- Ethics and Professionalism
For each area, you’ll provide examples that show how your experience meets our standards.
Timescale: There is no time limit on how long you take to complete the application. Once it is submitted the assessment process takes around 6 weeks.
