Two photographers have each won £1,500 in cash after they took the top prizes in the Chartered Institute of Building’s (CIOB) The Art of Building competition.

Taking almost 20% of the public vote, ‘Life Through History’ by Rahaman Hossain revealed the magnificent Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, India. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was first opened in 1572 to commemorate Mughal Emperor Humayun.

In stark contrast, Russian photographer Mikhail Proskalov scooped the Judges Choice Prize for his exquisite photograph of the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg, captured using drone technology. Standing at 462 meters tall, the Lakhta Centre is the tallest building in Russia and Europe.

Photographers from more than 100 countries submitted thousands of stunning photos of the built world to the annual Art of Building photography competition, run by CIOB.

The competition, now in its eleventh year, celebrates the creativity of the construction industry and the passion of the people who work within it. 12 photographers reached the final where they were voted upon by the public.

This year’s competition awarded two cash prizes worth £1,500 each for the Public Choice Award selected by the public, and the Judges’ Prize chosen by a judging panel.

“The winning photographs highlight just how important the built environment is to us as society and the emotions they can stir within us. From protecting our heritage to meeting the needs of modern life with a building that reaches for the stars. The built world is a wonder of our own creation and these photographers have captured that inspiration beautifully.”

Kate Macbeth, Director at CIOB and judge of the Art of Building
