On 22 November 2013, the Chartered Institute of Building signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors in a move that signifies greater collaboration between the professions.

The MoU, signed by Peter Jacobs, President of CIOB and Alan Barrow, President of ICES in London, seeks to encourage a positive environment within which both organisations can work more collaboratively.

It states that the organisations will honour the agreement by:

•    raising the profile and recognition of both the construction management and civil engineering surveying industries.
•    providing a basis for joint action across areas of common interest, including membership services, continuing professional development, education, training and skills.

Bridget Bartlett, Chief Operating Officer at the CIOB, said: “We have worked with the ICES for some time and we are delighted to formalise our relationship. This MoU shows our commitment to the principle of collaboration and we are keen to share our experience and knowledge as an Institute, whilst learning how else we can support our membership and the wider profession.”

Bill Pryke, Chief Executive Officer at the ICES, said: “Collaborative working between the professions is absolutely essential for our industry and will bring lasting benefit to the wider profession. There is a huge opportunity and desire for knowledge sharing and we believe that this dialogue will enable us to benefit our respective memberships through better training and education across the building, construction and civil engineering industries.”
