The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) have responded to Lord Teverson’s calls for the government to scale up the retrofit agenda in the UK.
Eddie Tuttle, Director of Policy, Research & Public Affairs at the CIOB said:
“Lord Teverson is right to challenge the Government to scaling up the retrofit agenda in the UK. Given 45 per cent of the UK’s total carbon emissions are a result of energy consumption in buildings, greater focus is paramount if we are to reach our ambitious sustainability targets.
“The retrofitting agenda isn’t purely about reducing carbon emissions, and there is a strong case for using domestic repair, maintenance and improvement work to support employment during the pandemic, improve the quality of our homes and make them more healthy, reducing the burden on the NHS.
“Consumer confidence is also vital for scaling up retrofitting, and the Government must work with trade and professional bodies to ensure competence is at the forefront of any plans.”
