As a member of the CIOB, there are loads of ways for you to get involved. Whether that’s by attending one of our events, becoming a trustee or mentoring a young professional, you can have a real impact as a CIOB member.

Demonstrate your knowledge and skills:

  • Share your knowledge/experience with the industry as a speaker at one of our events
  • Mentor a young professional through their qualification with CIOB’s mentoring platform
  • Become an assessor for the Professional Development Programme
  • Use your MCIOB or FCIOB as a post-nominal designation to distinguish your professionalism on your email signature, your business cards and your social media profiles
  • Organise or facilitate CPD or networking events, with support from CIOB staff
  • Form a working group – if keen to develop a certain aspect of CIOB in your location
  • Refer a friend or colleague to become a CIOB member

Lead the future of the industry

CIOB members can engage with policy and public affairs through the following mechanisms:

Consultations: We ask for input from members through Government department and industry body consultations and enquiries, increasingly internationally.

Research and surveys: We ask members to complete various surveys for research reports (e.g. our
mental health report) and for finding out attitudes.

Events: We invite members to attend and/or speak at a variety of policy and public affairs events. This might include roundtable discussions, reception style events, or webinars to discuss and raise certain questions with government, industry stakeholders and influencers.

Set the direction for CIOB

Join a hub committee: Representing our profession on a local hub committee is both a responsibility and a rewarding opportunity. Committee members develop their local networks and most importantly, expand their knowledge and expertise by giving something back to fellow construction professionals.

Impact strategy as a Committee member: The role of the Member Committee is to provide the strategic steer and voice of the member to our plans.

Become a prestigious trustee: Trustees have the ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of the CIOB and delivering its Royal Charter objectives. They set policy, oversee the budget and are legally responsible for the Institute.

Accessing industry recognised and trusted services for personal development

CPD: Continuing Professional Development, or CPD, is
any learning that adds value and enhances your occupational knowledge and skills. Attending
relevant events, conferences and seminars, reading
magazines and websites or researching new products
and innovative methods can all contribute to CPD.

Technical Publications: With members drawn from professional disciplines within building and construction supply chains, the CIOB hold a body of knowledge concerning the management of the total building process.

CIOB Library: The CIOB library offers Chartered Members, Fellows, Student members and Applicants a collection of
construction related online journals and e-books which
can be accessed globally, day or night.

Research and reports: We also produce our own research and reports on a variety of topics, often utilising the knowledge and expertise of our members.

CIOB Academy: The CIOB Academy is the home of professional development resources, designed to help those in construction or new to the industry further their careers, develop practical skills, gain qualifications and work towards Membership of CIOB.
