Mind the Gap: How CIOB is mapping the skills needed to build the future
The built environment is changing, fast. New technology, greener practices and evolving regulations are reshaping the industry every day. But are the people building our world equipped with the right skills to keep up?
To help answer that question, the CIOB launched a new and ambitious initiative, the CIOB Skills Gap Index. Based on fresh research from thousands of construction professionals around the world, the Index sheds light on the capabilities the industry is missing, and what needs to happen next.
A global picture of what’s missing
In autumn 2024, more than 2,500 CIOB members shared their views on the skills they believe are most lacking in today’s construction landscape. The research collected both data and real-world insight from members in every global region. It’s the start of a regular benchmarking process that will allow us to track how skill gaps evolve over time, and help the industry respond.
Unlike many industry studies that focus on workforce shortages, this index zooms in on the skills themselves, the capabilities professionals need to succeed, regardless of numbers. And thanks to the expertise of CIOB members around the globe, the Index brings unique, on the ground insight into how those skills are felt in practice.
What are the biggest gaps?
The Skills Gap Index identifies four broad themes:
- Modern professionalism: There’s high demand for better understanding and application of modern construction methods, as well as building regulations, especially in the areas of fire safety and compliance.
- Green skills: With sustainability no longer optional, the ability to work with sustainable technologies and understand the impacts of climate change has never been more vital.
- Digital and AI: The adoption of digital tools and artificial intelligence is rising rapidly, but the skills to use them effectively still lag behind.
- Quality: Understanding contracts, codes and standards, particularly in small to medium sized enterprises, is a recurring concern.
Taking action, bitesized learning for real world impact
Insight is only half the story. In response to these findings, CIOB is already developing a suite of ‘bitesized’ training modules, designed to address the most critical gaps head on.
Launching in 2026 on the CIOB Academy platform, these short courses will offer expert guidance, practical examples and mini assessments to help learners check their understanding. The aim is to provide accessible, affordable and actionable training, with each module acting as a stepping stone to more advanced learning or qualifications.
Building a stronger sector, together
The CIOB Skills Gap Index marks an important step in shaping a workforce ready to meet the demands of a modern, sustainable, high-quality built environment. And it’s just the beginning.
We’ll be updating the Index regularly, working with members and partners across the globe, and using what we learn to guide new training, qualifications and policy recommendations.
So if you're part of the construction industry, whether as a leader, learner or lifelong professional, this is your call to action. Understand the skills gaps. Take steps to fill them. And help build a stronger future for all.
