In today’s fast-paced economy, securing funding for training and development is crucial for organisations looking to enhance their workforce. However, the cost of training can be a barrier for many organisations. Fortunately, several funding streams are available to help UK businesses access the training they need for employee professional development, stay up-to-date, and comply with the industry's latest legislation. Here is some information about the major funding options:

1. CITB Employer Network Funding: your gateway to training grants

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is the go-to source for training funding in the UK construction sector. The Employer Network funding stands out as the most popular choice for construction companies among the various funding streams available.

This funding can provide significant discounts, enabling you to stretch your training budget further. For smaller companies, it could even enable you to access grants to cover all your training.

Any organisation whose primary purpose is at least 51% construction-oriented can apply for CITB Employer Network Funding. This includes everyone from sole traders to larger construction firms. Organisations must be registered with CITB and up-to-date with their levy contributions to access this funding. Once these requirements are fulfilled, they can claim funding to cover training costs.

What can the funding be used for?

The grants can finance a wide range of training courses, including prestigious Chartered Membership and the Diploma in Building Safety Management from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). CITB Employer Network funding can also cover training courses provided by CIOB, ranging from public courses to in-house private options.

2. CITB Skills and Training Fund: bridging the skills gap

Another valuable resource from CITB is the Skills and Training Fund, which aims to support the upskilling of the workforce in the construction sector.

Similar to the Employer Network funding, any construction organisation meeting the required criteria can apply. Organisations can apply directly through the CITB portal, ensuring they meet the necessary conditions and guidelines.

What’s covered?

This fund is versatile and can be utilised for CIOB inhouse, face-to-face and online training courses that align with an organisation's skills needs.

3. National Lottery Community Fund: a flexible alternative

While not specifically tailored for the construction industry, the National Lottery Community Fund is a viable option for charities and public entities that may not have access to other funding streams.

Primarily geared towards charities and public entities, this fund is open to anyone unable to secure traditional funding. Organisations can apply directly via the National Lottery Community Fund website.

What can you use it for?

The beauty of this fund lies in its flexibility—there are no restrictions on the courses; hence, organisations can use these funds for any training they deem necessary. Check out the National Lottery Community Fund here.

4. MCA/Local Government Funding: tailored to your region

Local government and Mayoral Combined Authorities (MCA), such as the South Yorkshire MCA (SYMCA), manage a range of devolved funds aimed at supporting training and development based on geographical criteria.

Availability is dependent on the region in which your organisation operates. Therefore, organisations should check with their local MCA for specific options.

The SYMCA has established a Skills Bank, providing employers with access to advice and funding through a straightforward application process. Local authorities often have dedicated teams to assist with applications and ensure companies get the necessary resources.

What’s covered?

Funds from local authorities can support various types of training and qualifications tailored to the specific needs of regional employers. Explore more about the SYMCA Skills Bank here.
